They're really not that close. The only one that is somewhat close is the guy with the camera crouching down on the left (he's with the monster truck guys) - and he's still a good 15-20 feet from the barrier, and about 25 feet behind the truck. The rest are actually beyond the end of the track - they were good about keeping people at a safe distance.
They weren't all that loud - that jet quad however was pretty damned loud!

cool perspective, not an angle you see that much, at least not in photos.
The guy who owns and drives (Mike Vaters) the truck pictured also owns the jet quad.
