I want to use something the size of at least 24"x24" or larger, and price would be nice to keep low as well.

I've been up and down other forums, and I've searched like crazy.

What I've found:
I need to use this bracket: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=197439&is=REG

from this kit:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/largeimages/522951.jpg

I have this bracket already (like 4 of them!):
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home;jsessionid=GnsShMsNr2!1237523616?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=298709&is=REG&addedTroughValue=197439_REG&addedTroughType=accessory_detail

Any suggestions? Like I said, price would be nice to keep low. I want to get at least 2 of these so I can use them for both portrait AND auto photography.

Well as you probably know, you need a "speedring" to mount a softbox. Chimera makes one specifically designed for small flashes like the 580EX... its about $50 here...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/179134-REG/Chimera_2795_Speed_Ring_for_Canon.html

and a 24x32 softbox at about $120

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/13270-REG/Chimera_1520_Pro_II_Softbox_for.html

I haven't used these, but I'd think it would work OK. Anything from PhotoFlex those is going to be pricey. I have one softbox from them that is well made, but I bought it because they had a speedring for my strobes... otherwise I would have gotten a cheaper one.

do you really wanna be hanging a box off the front of the flash Justin? cant you go to Home depot and get some flat aluminum and make a bracket of some sort? seems it wouldnt be too hard to do.

how do I attach that bracket to a light stand mike? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/179134-REG/Chimera_2795_Speed_Ring_for_Canon.html

And Craig, it's somewhat scarey yes. What kind of bracket you have in mind? I can't think of anything right now and may need a visual :(

Here is their catalog. On page 13 are pictures of these speedrings and how they fit onto a tripod and such. That should answer your questions. http://www.chimeralighting.com/products/downloads/ChimeraCatalog07.pdf

Then if you want to drool... go to page 14 and look at what you REALLY want to get to photograph a car... their F2 Light Bank. You can get a 15'x40' F2 for only $23,900! Then you just need a studio big enough to set it up.

I don't think you can really do that... each brand of softbox needs a speedring, and the speedring needs to mount on the strobe/flash. The speedring has holes machined in it to received the flexible rods that provide the structure to hold the softbox together. I really don't think you'd be able to make one of these from scratch with out some serious machining skills.

Mike, uh Craig is the "Macgyver" of DIY. You should see what he can do with Poptart plastic sheets, and some half chewed M&M's... As well give him some Duct tape, and some tupperware, He can build you a 30" x 200" Diffuser, and with an adjustible speed ring made out of tape..

yeah mike but in the photo the lightbox is on some type of bracket so it doesnt need to be hung off the strobe..

justin, if this is how yours is mounted, you can easilly get a piece of flat stock aluminum at the depot, bend it into shape and drill a couple holes, one to mount a she for the strobe and another to mount the bracket to the stand as well.

i'll have to view the flickr page when i get home (BLOCKED!) :(

As for that 2nd link with the kitebox, how is the bottom of the flash (and bracket) attached to the lightstand? God I'm getting worse and worse at thinking.

thats the flicker page.. the guy made an "L" bracket and it connects to the LB at one end and the bottom of the L part is where the flash shoe mount sits and its got a long enough bolt so it goes down into the swivel.. pretty neat and clean set up, spray paint it flat (or gloss) black and few will know its DIY!!

Ahhhh wheres your heart Mike, of course you can, you can do anything if you set your mind to it.. never say die!!!

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
(Opps sorry, Belushi moment..lol)

lol,lol... you dont need a speed ring for your speed light if you just have something to mount the "L" bracket too on the SB. Gimmie a SB, a stand, a flash and swivel.. Ill mount it up for ya in a jiffy, using only a few hand tools and good ole New england elbow grease.. (Ewwww) I got rolls and rolls of Gaffers tape, Im ready to do this. lol
