Caught an unusual barge heading south in the Thames River today. It was easy to research since it's ID was painted down the side of the hull and superstructure. It was the YRBM-L-40, a repair, berthing and messing barge - the "L" is for Large - there's a smaller one. It was being powered by a tug on the far side of the barge. And yes it was pouring at this point, but I'm stupid and take pictures in, I guess you could say less than ideal conditions. :D

1. Heading through the Thames River drawbridge

2. Further south, with the US Coast Guard cutter Eagle in the background

Now that's what I call a HOUSE BOAT, boy the party's you could throw on that thing. :D :D Nice shots. Like the second one with the Eagle shrouded in mist.

My thoughts exactly!!!

Tom, what does this barge repair? I've never seen anything like that. (of course, there's a lot I've never seen!)

I was thinking the exact same thing.

That second shot is very special... great work Tom!

Thanks guys! I guess it was worth it getting drenched in the pouring rain. :D Yeah, the one with the Eagle is one of my favs from the batch. Always nice including the tall ship in photos...

As for what it's used for - it's simply a floating dormatory that also has a machine shop in it. It's a place where the crew can safely bunk, eat and work off of the boat while it's being repaired, either in port, or at sea.

Here's some data on the barges from Globalsecurity.org

So basically, it's a Navy frat house.
