My daughter's team won again last night, and have now advanced to the Finals, to be played next Tuesday at UAlbany. Here are some shots from the match.

All were shot with 1DMk2N, and 200mm f/1.8, 135mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4, or Sigma 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye. I set white balance with an Expodisc, although it didn't do as good of a job here for some reason... I had to tweak color quite a bit more than normal. This is a brand new gym.. beautiful... yet I still was at f/2 and ISO1250 to get decent shutter speeds.

This first one is from the game that preceeded theirs... so different teams. I got to the gym just they were finishing up.

The rest are from the second match...

Thanks zacker,

On 3, the thing that I was trying do was show all the eyes on the girl hitting the ball... the players out of focus in the foreground, and the fans out of focus in the background. The other cool thing, is that smack in the middle of the crowd are this girls parents intently watching... which they will know when they see it, but others won't.

On 7, take a look at that girls hands. She has only a couple of nubs for fingers, and most aren't there at all. Her feet are the same way, and she has one leg that is a lot shorter than the other. The local newspaper just did a huge story on her volleyball accomplishments, in spite of her severe handicap.

She was an orphan from another country... China I think... and they don't really know when she was born. When she was first adopted, they tried to guess and gave her a birth date. Now, even though she is a Junior, she won't be eligible to play volleyball next year because of some NY State age rules.... even though her doctors now say that based on development, she is much younger than they originally thought. The family is appealing to try and get this changed.

Anyway, she is a great athlete and uses her handicap to her advantage in volleyball. She hits the ball with the end of her hand, with much more control that I think other people could have with that type of hit. It looks like she's hitting it with her fist from a distance, but really it just the end of her hand. She has been a great setter for the team this year, and she has a great spirit as a player.

12... well that's my MVP... so that's a favorite of mine too.

I can't wait to see them play in the finals, and in a college venue. They will have a ball. They seem to be laughing and having fun, no matter what the circumstances of their games.

Number 10 caught some interesting expressions on the girls, as they prepare for serve.

i like the shots where you can see the "Action" and the looks in the players faces.. the concetration and all the emotion they put into the sport. You seem to be in the right spot all the time Mike!

WOW! You've really got some great 'STOP' action shots there amazing clarity considering the high ISO and overall conditions. You probably could have gone even higher on the ISO and not lost any quality on the photos, really like them all. :)
