Prett sweet series Justins!

Any former headliner playing the Webster is a washup...whoops, did I say that??? :D ;) Been to the Webster a bunch of times, as a patron, caterer and sound guy. Decent room - quite boomy from a sound perspective. I remember when they opened and still had the original theater seats still in. That didn't last long.... :D

Actually, I still listen to PM5K quite a bit. Useless info time - PM5K's lead singer, Spyder, is the real-life brother of Rob Zombie (Family name is Cunningham), and both hail from, if I remember correctly, Cambridge, MA. Either way, it's always good for a band to take the stage prior to a larger name. Although, in some cases, I've seen the openers bring in more people that the headliners.....

Nice.. and Toms right... Brothers.. Both great singers if ya ask me.

He's right about the webster too, My nephewes band opened for ...get this.... The Misfits.. lol, he had no idea who they were.. actually, they do go back to the 80's though and are still around today, not as big as they were, but then again, they were never that big outside of the Hardcore/Punk world..lol
Great job Justin... really nice for ISO 1600.. any noise reduction done?

No noise reduction. These are right out of the camera, except for that one in the gallery I burned of the drummer.

Well, I wouldn't call Anthrax a washup. That place was so mobbed I couldn't move. And some bands just play smaller venues for the accoustics. I've seen a few bands at the Meadows in Hartford then at the Webster, and it was a much better show. I understand what you mean though. If it were the 1990's still, I think these guys would be playing with other bands, maybe even opening with someone else.

I know about spyder... still a washup. The misfits, i don't think there's any original members anymore -- they should change their name already.

I'll let you guys in on a story of what happened to me that night. I guess I walked by the Powerman bus to get inside (it was parked AT the door) and I had the camera around my shoulder. Once I get inside the head of security comes over and says "powerman isn't coming in unless that professional photographer leaves"

He then said to just keep the camera in my bag, i guess Buck Cherry did the same thing last time they were in town. Fair enough, they don't know i'm there to see only the local bands.

Curtain Hits the Cast was 4th in line, the last band before Powerman5000. They were scheduled to play 6 but on the 5th song, the SAME tour manager that complained about me earlier got on the PA system and said "last song!"

So just as they're ending their 5th and last song, the tour manager gets on stage and starts unplugging their amps and pushing them off stage. Needless to say, we informed the gentleman on how successful Powerman's new stuff has been.:D I've never seen the Webster so empty before... when Curtain got off stage the crowd mostly either left or went to the back towards the bar. Powerman should be thanking the local bands for bringing a crowd in at all.

All in all, it was an experience. I doubt the headliner even knows what was happening out on the stage when they were in their bus still. Just poor management all around

OK, I guess I was being a tad general....I wouldn't call Hatebreed washed up either, and they played the Webster soon after playing the main stage at Ozzfest (pretty good Ozzfest overall this year). Although it was a bit weird hearing them plug the show from the main stage - kinda reminded me of the club scene...only with a few thousand people around... :D But anyways, yeah, washups do come through there, as do some pretty good acts - both on their way up and down. I've seen the place both empty and packed to the rafters.

Now that's damn funny!! But it doesn't surprise me at all....once they think they're big, they always think that way. My dad got into an argument with John McEnroe when we had him at the club about signing autographs after the show. After a quite heated "discussion", my father convinced him to do it. :D And of course at the opposite end of the spectrum was Zakk Wylde. More than willing to not only sign autographs after the show, but also drink quite a few kamikazies with us! But I for the life of me can't find the pictures I took that night. It was on his acoustic tour in August of 1996 if I remember correctly. Only him and a bunch of candles on stage...great show....

OK, back to the show pix - one question - do they have a fenced in area between the pit and the stage, or were you tossed about while shooting from in front of the stage?

thats funny tom, My buddies dad used to have alot of big names at the studio in the late 60's and early to mid 70's and got into a fight with Mic Fleetwood,, he said he thought he was gonna get his butt kicked because mic was huge!..lol

nice story about Zakk. I love him as a guitar player, wish he stayed away from the mic though :(

I do love the acoustic version of "stillborn"!!!

as for me being protected from the crowd, check the 1st pic in this link:

justin, did you use the new flash bracket? the shots are nice and sharp...no motion blur or very, very little.. also, what AF mode did you use.. I tried to shoot my nephewes band once, no flash, 75-300 IS and even ISO 800 on my XT i got so much blur the pics are a waste!

I had a thread on POTN about using the flash, and they said not to use it during a live show (some places don't like the use of it). I used the on camera flash to get the lead singer in the crowd, but that's it. I just jacked the ISO to 1600 and shot at f4 all night.

thanks again for looking guys

wow.... they came out great... I asked because I was wondering if they were noise free because you used the flash.. I gotta try shooting at higher ISO's it just seems that i get allot of noise.. maybe Im too picky?

Shutter 50 fps
(that's from the top of my head)

WOW... thats a fast camera... (sorry, couldn't resist being a #$%#%)

Beautiful shots. I really like that lens a lot.... gave you a nice wide view from a crop camera.

Zacker, the noise thing is somewhat masked when you shrink an image, so you would really need to look at some 100% crops from these to really assess the noise. They look great though.

did a myspace banner for them... i hate bordem:
http://libanophotos.com/Curtain/October15thPoster500.jpg (myspace.com/curtainhitsthecast)

the 50fps was enough to freeze their motion. I wanted to slow it down to get more motion, but I'd rather play it safe with these since it was my 1st time out there. Def next time.

Don't you mean 1/50 of a second? FPS usually means Frames Per Second. That's pretty quick....movies are only shot at 30 FPS... :D ;) I think that's what Mike was getting at above.... :D

and it took TWO posts for me to figure that out. DURH 1/50 for a 20D sounds more realistic doesn't it. lol
