Today was Ross' first trip to Washington Hill. Ryan and I were supposed to meet him at Lower Valley Road in Becket, MA for 10am but a little car trouble stopped us from that. We finally got there about an hour late. When we got there Ross told us that we just missed an Amtrak engine move.

A little while later the Pittsfield local came down the hill with granite loads for Chester.

A little while after that, empty autorack train Q283 struggled up the hill past us.

Later, we heard a rumble in the distance. Five minutes later, a long and heavy Q425 crawled up the hill. The engines sounded great.

After the train rounded the curve, we decided to head a few miles up the hill to Washington Cut.

We saw the Pittsfield local head back west and a little while later Q293 crawled upto the summit of Washington Hill

After Q293 we decided to head down to Pittsfield to get a bite to eat. After lunch we drove upto Hinsdale, MA and waited.....and waited....and waited. Finally some "action". Ross got up and walked away.

Once Ross came back, we heard the westbound Lake Shore Limited calling the signal at CP140, two miles away. We set up for the shot. Then I heard a rumble behind us. I turned around to see the eastbound Lake Shore Limited coming up the hill. For the first time in years, I've seen both Lake Shore's meet.

Right behind the westbound Amtrak was the engine move that Ross had seen earlier. This time it had some switchers from New Haven going to Albany for some maintanence. Of course my shots didn't come out so either Ross or Ryan will have to show you.

HI Adam

Nice group of photos. That unit in the first shot sure is blue.
I wish I could have been with you folks. Maybe the next time
you make a trip to the hill I could tag along and fill a need for the
Flanged Wheel on Steel Rail. It has been a good number years since I
overdosed of trains. I feel a need for the smell of diesel fumes.
Great photos!

You will definitely smell the diesel fumes on the hill! Once in a while one of the engines will burp a flame. Anyone who wants to be subjected to the Berkshire Moron antics are welcome to tag along when we go railfanning. Just drop one of us a line and we will let you know when we are going out again.

Love number 10... would be cool if the two engineers had "high fived" each other out the window as they passed. Maybe you could photoshop that in... :)
