The other place is in East Windsor and that's the Trolley Museum. It's probably about a half hour drive from Newgate prison

Do they have cells and stuff in there?

Is the mine/prison a full day, half day, or just an hour or so type place to visit?

Well when your 45' below ground with just a shaft to get in and out really wasn't much need for cells. :D :D All kidding aside, I think they had some cells up top. take a look at the map'

You could probably do the whole place in a couple of hours including the video, there is some places for a picnic and I believe some hiking, You could do both the Prison and the Trolley Museum in a day. I would do the prison first have a little picnic lunch and than drive the 1/2 hour to East Windsor and ride the trolleys :) :) if you don't like the picnic Idea there are some good family style restuarants on the route to the Trolleys just before you get there in East Windsor, just off I-91/ Rte140

If it's a day like these past 2 days have been you may never want to come out of the mine. :D :D be prepared to have your lens and glasses if you wear them to instantly fog up when you come out.

Plenty of headroom where you walk (for the most part) I was shooting up into some of the mine area where you really can't go. The prison was also a copper mine where supposedly the cooper for one of the first coins in the US came from.

OK.. I guess I missed the "mine" part. I'm get a bit out of sorts when in really tight confined spaces... so I may not really like it down there. :(

Me too, It's really not that bad down there, fairly well lite where you walk the loop is easy walking, and you can always just turn around and go back out, they have constructed a set of very wide concrete stairs to get down in the mine. it really shouldn't be a problem. You should have seen it before when all they had was a series of ladders, that was scary.

I think I might have another photo inside that shows a little expanse of the area.

Sounds like a great place to visit....I want to get the kids to Howes Caverns soon.

This place sounds close to some caves we went exploring yrs ago back in NH....Polar Caves....awesome place to go and one of the caves was still frozen/closed in the middle of summer  Have to see if we can find some pics from then:dunno

Copper, from the museums web site:
Mining operations began at the Old New-Gate location in 1705. However, mining was not profitable, and in 1773 the Colony of Connecticut began to use the abandoned tunnels as a prison. It was used to house prisoners during the American Revolution, and in 1790 became the state prison. Closed as a prison in 1827, Old New-Gate has primarily been used as a tourist attraction since the 1860's
and from another site:
East Granby's population boomed in the early eighteenth century due to the discovery of large copper deposits. Although the industry peaked early because of declining copper values and increasing difficulties in extracting the ore, its local history was capped by the issue of copper coins by a local blacksmith named Higley in 1737 and 1739. The coins are so valuable now that are preserved by museums as well as private collectors It's really an
interesting place.
