Here was kind of a high point for the day... it doesnt seem like much in the pictures... but this is a bonafide ride on a working turntable on foot!!! I would bet there isnt a handful of these still in existance today in NY...

WOW! What a wonderful series of shots. I really like the shot of the north street station from the south. As far as turntables go I'll bet theres darn few working ones left in the country never mind NY.

Beautiful work Ross.... I'll definitely add that to the return trip when my son and I go to camp again.

(just a reminder that we should all number our shots to make it easier for comments... hint, hint.... ;) )

If all goes well, there should be one more turntable working at the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum (http://www.cteastrrmuseum.org) in Willimantic, CT next year. We're pretty close to setting the bridge on the cone. Next step is to lay rail on the bridge, and extend the spur from the switch off the main (switch is already in progress) to the turntable, and finally lay rail up to each of the six roundhouse bays - two of which currently have rail set over the pits inside the roundhouse.

As for active turntables on freight railroads, I believe the New England Central Railroad's turntable at St. Albans, VT is active, as is the Vermont Rail System's turntable at Burlington, VT.
