View Full Version : A Tribute to "Gumby" - Softball

My daughter's varsity softball team had their end of season party last night at our house. She earned the nickname "Gumby" this year because at first base the balls that were thrown to her were caught, no matter how and where they were thrown. She set a school record with 110 Put-outs and 0 errors... 1.000 record. She also led the team this year in steals, but didn't break her own record from last year on that one. She is a great athelete and loves to compete in any sport.... basketball being her favorite. Here are a few shots of her from this season.

1. A moment to relax

2. Ready for action

3. Another steal in the books

4. How does she do that?

5. She caught me with the 400 2.8.... I guess its hard to hide with that!

6. The middle of a double play

7. A scoop up at the last second for an out

8. Not the greatest of my pictures, but this is what she does...

9. You have to get on base to steal!

Nice compilation! I was wondering, whats with the red bag @ first base? Is it so the runners don't step on the fielder in tight plays? Great shots!! Crisp details, and supurb action! Way to go Gumby!!!! How is she able to keep her feet on the bag like that? She's not on the ground, yet she's still on the bag!!!! Kudos!!!

I'm not sure what the thing with the extra bag is... but it does help avoid collisions.... but they do still happen sometimes.

I played catch with her at the park this weekend, and her one foot never leaves the pivot point... no matter how wild my pitch is. Last year she had a problem with missing balls to keep her foot on the bag, and it drove the coach crazy. She was telling her to get the ball first, then worry about the bag. This year her arms must have been a little longer or something, because she reeled in just about anything that came near her.... and she saved a lot of errors for her team mates. All three of the catches in this series would have probably been scored as errors for the other player if they got by her... low, high, and wide.

Nice series.. good job to you to, for getting the shots! Also, congrats to "Gumby" for making some pretty amazing saves! The next "Jeeter" gotta get her out on SS and see how she does!

She's a great kid... I showed her this thread so I'm sure your comments will be appreciated. She knows I'm always out there snapping pictures and she loves to see what I got when we get home. And, she loves her sports.
