This is from a series of posts I did a while back when learning the D2H... reposting here as they might help someone.

My main reason for posting this was to affirm that I'm still liking Focus Priority AF-C with the D2H. I did a couple of games on Friday and continued to use AF-C, Dynamic Area, Focus Priority, and AF-ON Button Only, and got good results. I can only get my shutter speed up to about 1/250 at ISO1000, so I'm not getting the sharpness I'd like, but for my purposes I'm getting a lot of keepers. I would say that less than 10-15% of my shots were out of focus for reasons that the camera/me missed our target. Contrast that with only about 20% keepers when not using Focus Priority. Here is an example of what this setting can do. This girl in the background I was tracking. The other girls in the foreground didn't disrupt the camera from staying on target on a break. I don't recall if she ran behind them for a time or not, but generally the camera stays on target even in those cases.

I tried experimenting with using the SB800 during practice and got horrible results. I was not getting much help from it in shutter speed without direct flash, and I don't want to do that. It flashes the player and darkens the background (if I crank up the shutter speed to 1/500). I haven't given up on that and will try it some more this week. I have a stroboframe camera flip coming.

Resigning myself to the slower shutter speeds, I'm starting to look for composition that lends itself to that. I used to try and shoot the shooter duing a foul shot, but I've started going after the "boxing out" going on under the net. I've gotten some really neat and funny shots there. Here are a few... not the greatest sharpness... but we are working on that.
