FYI for some reason the AMA links arent working... you can go to HERE (http://www.ama-cycle.org/amrace/events/events.asp?sid=) to see the AMA search engine.

Ross,

Can you give a brief bit of information on shooting motocross. Can you shoot freely at all these tracks, or do you need to get any credentials to bring in "pro gear" to shoot. Is this a 400-500 long lens type environment when shooting as a spectator, or is a 70-200 sufficient?

Well....

I have not shot from but a few of these tracks... never has anyone questioned photographers... but you will definately be shooting from outside the fence... some have SUPER vantage points though and your shots will come out as well as if you were inside...

As far as equipment I would say that you could use a 70-200/70-300/100-400 range but you will be cropping your pics a little in some areas... a 400 or 500 would be really good but definately not necessary... they do have a photographer that travels across NY doing the circuit (working pro) so as to not step on toes I wouldnt go with the intention of setting up shop... but if someone sees you taking pics and want copies who can turn that down... =)

My questions were more for shooting portfolio work, rather than "setting up shop". Can you recommend a good track that has the best vantage points? Assume I'd be using a 400mm?

Oh I know... that was just a general "putting the info out there" thing...

The tracks I have been to from the above list all would be good ones to try out... they pretty much all have low fences... and you are in pretty decent proximity to the track area...

I have been to:
Diamondback, Unadilla, Walden, Broome-Tioga, Ace, Royal Mountain, and Claverack...

Royal Mountain is a really cool smaller track with some mountainous areas on it... and they race a LOT there... its about an hour drive...

Diamondback, Ace, and Walden are in the same area (if I remember right) which is south of Albany in the Hudson area... they are all decent..

Unadilla and Broome-Tioga are both national tracks... they are both HUGE... and you will need to bring some energy to walk them... but they both offer "ok" shooting areas... I would plan on going outside of a national weekend first... they are both down I-88 a ways

Claverack is a decent little track just south of Albany off 9/9J (north of Hudson) and has short fences... and some good vantage points...

-----

I would probably try to check out Royal Mountain or Ace/Diamondback... I know either Ace or Diamondback has a wednesday night practice... and I think Royal has wednesday (or one of the weeknights) races...

Fort Plain is pretty close to here, right?

I had thought it was down by the city for some reason but when I just googled it showed that it was out a little past Canajoharie/Sharon Springs... so yeah that isnt too far either... maybe 60 miles from Albany....

They play my daughter's team sometimes in sports... sectionals primarily... so I knew they had to be close by here.

Ross is right, Ft Plain would be about an hour or so from the Albany area to drive.....you can go up the thruway and then hop off around exit 29 or so (don't remember the exact exit so don't hold me to it)....It's either fulton or montgomery county....I get confused as to how the county lines run, lol....don't know who drew those lines but htey don't always make sense.
