My favorite pictures to shoot are fast moving, action shots http://www.arcticchat.com/forums/html/emoticons/slomo.gif

I put in a lot of time while I was in college as a volunteer photographer (college events, school newspaper, the yearbook, etc) ...and finally managed to gain a little recognition as an amateur photographer (especially for my action shots, and catching people in unawares - campus life, funny moments, frat parties...LOL) ...after I graduated, I was hired as a part time photographer for Alfred State College and Alfred University...

I spent many years developing the ability to get good action shots with a 35mm... and now I feel like I'm back at the beginner level with a digital camera :wall LOL

Here's a few of my favorite 35mm action shots...

I may be a little biased... but I dont think you are anywhere close to a beginner... you know what it takes to make a great shot... and none of your pictures are "snapshots"... you are just entering a new realm of photography... =)

Thank you :blush =) ... I guess it is about learning a new way to shoot, and also, for me, learning more about the technical aspects of shooting, and more about my own equipment.... For someone who LOATHES manuals, instructions, or anything that comes with drawings or designs... thats really difficult :Hammer :doh LOL

and I think you are definitely biased :love :D

Ok... now for some fun shots... There's an annual tradition back home in Alfred called Hot Dog Day... put on by the 2 local colleges.... it's a weekend long event that consists of a parade, a street carnival, several competitions including the Mud Olympics, and a LOT of drinking :cheers :cheers (of course, there are college students involved...LOL)...

This guy was refereeing the volleyball game... he was too clean, obviously, so his friends tried to take him down... LOL
... he held his own though :rock ... i'm not sure if he was super-strong, or just really prissy about getting dirty :D

These shots were taken with a Minolta, using a 100-300mm lens.... from behind a set of bleachers and through a crowd....

... the second one is my favorite shot... and won me first place in a photo contest :)

Actually, some of the best pictures I have, are ones I promised to never use :busted:Shake

I had to share in a LOT of beer drinking to get some of those shots :pound :pound :pound ... but I made a lot of friends :rock :rock :rock:love ... and I've sure got some blackmail material if I need it :whip :hail :hail LOL

Awesome pics!!! You are far much better at action shots than me!!! And I know what you mean about reading instructions, lol...I"m the same way! I much prefer to just try it out and figure things out for myself! Of course it does tend to take longer, lol.

Thanks Kim! Yea... I definitely learn some things better doing it hands on :read LOL .... nothing wrong with "book" learning, I've got a couple degrees to prove I can do that  ... but when it comes to anything mechanical or technical... I need to touch and feel and apply it before I seem to absorb it :blush

Reading the book and looking at pictures just doesn't really portray how a picture is going to turn out on different settings!!!! You're right, its def a hands on thing! I have degrees in CRJ and Psych and they taught me some, but its been my life experience where I put it to use where I actually got it!

I hear ya... I picked up degrees in Accounting, in Financial Planning, and in Business Management... along with a couple minors in Journalism and Economics... and after all that - they're just hanging on my wall collecting dust :D ... Most of the knowledge I've gained and the career progress I've made came thru taking risks at work and just plunging ahead and learning on the job, along with a healthy dose of stubbornnes and obnoxious determination. :rock
