This is my first post. Been reading some of the replies here and looks like this is a good community to a get critique and advice. This is a photo i took during fall. I would like the image to show that it's almost winter and lakes are starting to freeze.. but somehow I think it doesn't come across. any advice?http://s762.photobucket.com/albums/xx262/heidi_lu/?action=view&current=032010c.jpghttp://s762.photobucket.com/albums/xx262/heidi_lu/?action=view&current=032010c.jpg

Welcome to the site...
its a nice photo although to me its depressing because i hate winter so much so id say its working to convey the message that winter is on its way. You can prolly make it a bit stronger by editing out some of the greenis color of the water / Ice to make it more like a whiteish, icy tone.. and you might wanna clone out that branch in the upper left.. there is alot of stuff you can do.. what editing software are you useing.

the rules for landscape photos are that you need to have a good foreground (you have it - stones with nice colors and texture) and good background (sky, forest) and good in-between content.
The problems you have is poor background.. sky is mostly of one tone, no details of the trees b/c they are all naked and look just like a dark mass.
