Does your Oly have built-in flash? If so, in those backlit shots like this, its good to pop it up for fill flash... would fill the shadows on that person on the front horse.

Great colors.

You read my mind... I was going to ask about that, actually.

Yes, pop-up flash... good thing, too, because the cheapest flash I've seen is like $250!! :doh

Usually the pop-up is pretty good for fill since you don't need that much light. That would have been a perfect spot to try it. It might not have had enough pop for that second horse, but should have reached the first one.

good looking Horses...

Yes, what Mike said, flash would help and remember, you dont need to stick with OLY flashes, you can check third arties like Sigma and a few others i cant think of right now though!

Thanks again on the feedback... I'm brainstorming on stuff I can do which doesn't involve buying anything else for a while...

You know... like using environmental conditions or compensating for certain things in natural ways, etc...

Also, I don't want to become TOO dependent on processing because I feel it's important to be able to come out with a good shot without processing.... but that having been said, I'm a computer nerd... so I rather like all the stuff you can tweak on the computer... :)

No one ever accused me of being decisive... LOL.

Nothing wrong with processing. The objective is to produce the best possible shot. the means by which you do this, doesn't matter. Of course, aim for the best shot out of the camera if possible and then tweak from there.

don't forget... even if you grab that perfect shot... there's always the artistic processing for fun as well.

I definitely want to get into HDR at some point...but I figure I'm WAY off from that yet...

You'd be surprised how easy HDR is. Does your camera do bracketed exposure shots - 3 shots. 1 at 0 ev, one at +1 ev and one at -1 ev. You can do +-2 or whatever. Not just 1. Then you use photomatix for instance and it basically does it all for you.

I'm pretty sure it can do all that... working my way through the manual... tiny bit by tiny bit... to avoid brain fry and all that.

did you look at a Magic Lantern Guide for your camera? it goes through it all like the manual but more like plain english.

they make a book for each model camera but not only talk about the camera specific stuff. they do into aperture and iso as concepts and then talk about how to work each specifically with your model.

I ordered it and it's going to be here on Friday... YAY... so I guess me and my friend are going to find things to take pics of this weekend.
